This was supposed to be so easy.

"What's next?" he asked, although he already knew, but the silence had grown between them and needed to be filled.

"Bridesmaid's gifts."

She gave him directions, reading Paris's careful handwriting. Looking in the mirror, he eased the truck out into the traffic, the gears grating when he fished for the correct one.

"Driving really is not your thing is it?"

"That noticeable?" He grimaced as the crunched again.

"To everyone in the street."

Feeling like a bit of a fool he tried to concentrate on fine tuning his driving skills. The result was an irritable bear.

"Damn, did you see that, he cut me up." He hit the horn, only it was the windscreen wipers, making his temper flare. The blood rushed to his face, and he gripped the steering wheel as if he was ringing the neck of the driver in front of him.

"Hey, calm down. We've got plenty of time, just take it easy."

He glanced over at Lauren, about to say something harsh, then he saw her concern, and took a deep breath. "Sorry. I hate crowds, and cars."

"I can tell. It must have been hard moving away from your family. So what do you like about where you live?"

"The beach and the ocean, I love the openness, the freedom. And the quiet. Even in a high wind it's better than the city. Do you know what I mean?” He hoped she did because he sounded like a sap.

"I've never seen the ocean."

He nearly crashed into the guy who had cut him up. His foot only just hitting the brake in time. "Never?"

"No. My mom wasn't one for leaving our street to be honest. She'd hold a job down for a while, but she was a recluse. Always paranoid about other people. Hated stepping on cracks in the pavement, that sort of thing."

"I thought that only applied to kids, the whole snakes hiding between the cracks."

"Not my mom. She was crazy. I see that now."

He glanced at her again, and his sympathy grew. it must be hard on a kid, having to put up with so much and having no support. Lauren turned to him, and smiled, a sad expression filling her face. At this moment she was the most vulnerable thing he had ever set eyes on. Her pale skin and golden hair giving her such an air of innocence. If their errands hadn't been so important he would have pulled the truck over right now and kissed her pain away.

He was turning into an old romantic after all.
